Despacito was released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the most streamed song within six months. The song was a mix of reggaeton and pop music that not only drew attention to Latin music but also reggaeton. In 2015 there were two mostly Spanish-language songs on Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. In the height of Despacito's chart-topping success in 2017, 19 tracks primarily composed in Spanish made it to into the Top 100. This number rose to 41 in 2020. In the wake of Justin Bieber's dual remix of Despacito (2017) well-known artists soon began collaborating with reggaeton performers including Drake and Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) and Madonna and Maluma for Medellin (2019). As early as the year 2020, some musicians from reggaeton felt dissatisfied with the direction it was moving towards the popular. Rauw Alajandro is a part of a new generation of musicians who are determined to shift the course. The genre often incorporated electronic dance as well as different styles.
